I have many characters, and I STILL enjoy drawing fanart more than them. I think, the time has come to put the pen down and pick up a book-DUNDUNDUNDUN. It seems that my imagination is not as great as I thought.
Having many characters with no background story isn't such a bad thing. Example: Aséo, one of the Alopecoides foxes. Back then, i created him based on some of my childhood stories (a fox that goes on to search something. Thinking about it, i come to conclusion that all the stories i tell have this characteristic, actually. There always is a "search/journey" in it. Okay, random fact) and for the mere sake of having him created. I liked his design, but the childhood story with him was so old, outdated and full of plot holes that it couldn't survive that way. And for a long time, i just...had him. With no decent background story or anything. But that didn't change the fact that i brought him to life.
And suddenly, after YEARS, out of nowhere - i knew it. Why, were, who, i knew everything. Some characters just need to reveal themselves to you and suddenly, there is the story.
And some "characters" are even worse. Some even evolve their very own dynamics and you can't do anything about it but watch and write what they tell you about themselves.
Yes, I know that feeling! I thought too about making a story about a mother cheetah that goes on a journey to find her cubs, inspired by something I read when I was young- A mother's story by Hans Christian Andersen. But, just like you said, it had so many gaps, and I felt like the idea was so used, so sappy, that I finality gave up, also because I didn't had time for such things.
But, it seems that I became pretty fond of Calypso. I made so many silly sketches of her, since I posted my first drawing here
