Fox Tutorial by Culpeo-Fox Fox Tutorial by Culpeo-Fox
yay :P

besides the popular "why do you love foxes"- question, the most popular question people ask me is "can you give me tips on drawing foxes?" or something like that. we go. a long long long promised, crappy tutorial about drawing foxes. (btw. while browsing through dA i realized that there are - as always - a dozen wolf tutorials while you just rarely find good fox tutorials...bla. i love it to be a rebel :P )

cave: this tutorial doesn´t show the basics of drawing, it just give you tips about drawing foxes.

hopefully it can help you here and there....

several things i have to mention:
the poses and headshots were inspired by natural fox photographies to keep the images anatomically as correct as possible.

the photos are (c) to their much respected photographers.
unfortunately i wasn´t able to find out those. if you know some of these photographers, please tell me so i can add their names down here. thank you :)

tutorial (c) moi.

several inspiration is also taken from
"carving wolves, foxes and coyotes" by desiree hajny
and from
"der rotfuchs" by fritz koenen

EDIT: first thank you very much for the support, i was like "woah, geez! D:" when i came online today and suddenly i got about 1,000 messages more...thank you guys, i hope the tut can be useful to you :)

but its not the reason of my EDIT. :P
after it happens now several times, i thought i type it down here once again.
yes. i hate sparkledogs. please...stop whining now, like "omfg, you hate them, how dare you, you´re so ignorant!!1!1eleven" ...ignorant? no. i just don´t like them. get over it

once again:
fantastic characters - doesn´t matter if hybrids of thousands of critters in it, are okay for me - as long as it can be loosely recognized as an animal and not a complete ugly monster-mutant-thingie.
a little tatoo, a single collar is okay too - but no overload of earrings, pendants and so on.
characters with five colours or six or seven or eight are okay as well - but not twenty or thirty, including extreme neon pink or green or something like that.
little fluffy features here and there - is also okay - but i do not mean hyperfluffiness.

if your character is a dog with a little sign, thats okay - i never said that this makes your character a sparkledog. the thing i despise are those mentioned omguberhyper-designs, which makes your eyes bleed and are just plain kitschy....

less is more. thats the essential thing i tried to say. and at the end, its also a matter of taste.
no offense to you or any other people. its just my opinion. i respect yours, so please respect mine - nuff said. :P

Sparkledogs are too much but I don't think limiting yourself to completely natural colors and patterns is very good either.

 hey! if you got time to reply oto this, or if someone else can, just let me know about fennec foxes please? like, i know they probably fit into the kitlike thing, but it dosen't really explain much, like cartoony and general sizes of the features compared to the body and head.... sorry! ^^;

This looks like it'll be a great help. I've been looking at different styles of drawing foxes in both feral form and anthro and I do feel like I'm improving. This one actually explains the process and makes sense XD
Definitely going to watch ;)

Thank you for this tutorial. I have a fox as a character in my comic, but she won't be showing up for a long time.

So.... I guess I owe you my thanks. Another animal I can learn to draw besides wolves and rabbits. :)

Keep up the good work, Culpeo-Fox. Can't wait to see more.

I'm trying to make a fox character for a book/story I am currently working on, and making concept art for him has proven difficult. But this has actually helped quite a lot. Thank you~

I imagine you're probably sick of getting so many comments on this old piece tutorial by now, but I can't help myself xD
This is very helpful, and I like how you show different kinds of foxes; not just ye olde generic red fox.

And also, I completely get the whole sparkledog thing. Like it feels like somebody just sat back and said "I want to make this character unique... I'll just slap a TON of COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT AND RANDOM things on there to show how original I am!" I think doing that actually shows a complete lack of originality; you're having to rely on creating a mutant out of completely generic objects instead of just relaxing and making a fox/dog/whatever that can be distinguished from the generic animal.

It's actually a really helpful "crappy" tutorial! I honestly probably will return to this to study the foot design or eyes even the snoze you've provided for aspiring fox lovers :meow: so ty for this tutorial Culpeo! ^^ I appreciate someone taking time to make a "How to" tutorial :meow: for I know they take longer than expected to finish.

I totally agree with the sparkledog thing, its overkill when you make your main oc 'sparkle' or give them insane colors. Some of my ocs have crazy colors just because I think it represents me but I dont do the whole 'black, pink, and sparkly!' cliche xD

Thanks for this tutorial! ^^ I just created a fox OC, so this should come in handy.

I have a similar attitude to the 'sparkle dogs'. I'm a wolf artist, like you're primarily a vulpine artist - not because they're fluffy, cute, or 'cool', because I actually, genuinely love them. And whenever I say I'm a wolf artist, people immediately get the impression of sparkly wolves with hairdos, huge big fluffy tails, outrageous patterns and stupid proportions. :/ It's sad, but true.

It's funny how the simplest designs are usually the most potent.

Brilliant as always! Hug

eh trust me when one says wolf artist I immediately imagine super realistic wolves (lol)

Couldn't agree more about the whole 'sparkledog' thing. That's just bad character design...

I have just thought that I want to increase my repertoire as well, and foxes might be a good idea as I draw cats...and they are quite similar to them....then again I may just draw a cat lol! (or a cat with a long snout!)

it's really nice to see a how to draw (some animal) tutorial that doesn't just go over the basics, they're good for beginners and they helped me out some time back but there are a lot of them compared to this sort of thing that explains why you'd draw something the way you do and not just how to draw an animal in one stance
