Foxes of the World by Culpeo-Fox Foxes of the World by Culpeo-Fox
:iconreadplz:
ATTENTION: PLEASE READ, BEFORE COMMENT. (because i´m tired of replying the same questions again and again and again...it just can´t be, that person xy ask things like "but where is the silver fox here?" while it IS mentioned in the text below :P )

if you need any reference of foxes in colour, size comparison, species, because you have to learn something about that for school or because you are just curious or whatever. please. you can use it. as long as it is used privately for your own. in other words:
please do not steal it. i spend so many hours in doing this. :)
all credits are (c) to moi. :P

for everyone: CRAB-EATING FOX here is named as MAIKONG (cerdocyon thous) because: maikong is german for crab eating fox (that sounds so cool, even for german ears :P )

also, to answer all those, who are looking for cross fox, silver fox, etc: these foxes are _NO_ seperate fox species, but just color variations of vulpes vulpes (red fox); i also made a little list of them; to see this list about those, follow this link:
[link]

and then, to answer all those who don´t get why i put the maned wolf in there:
the maned wolf is no real wolf, even though it is called "wolf". it is actually more related to foxes, though it is no real fox either. thats why you´ll find it here as a "foxlike" canine.

alright now? ;)

so, those were the important facts. if i´ll find now a comment like "omfg, why is there no silver fox??!!11eleven, i´ll bite your head off. :P

personal stuff at least:
finally done! *phew* all foxes of the world on ONE paper. well, it was a work of a few weeks...hard work. but it was fun. (every day a little bit) completely done on pc.

i think, one of the reasons, i did this, was, that nearly everyone, who hears or says "fox", has the red fox in mind...but there are so many other fox species in the world, some of them nearly unkown - so i did this (including extinct species on the bottom, but without all the subspecies of every single fox-species ;) well, maybe i´ll add them some day )

god, i hope, i didn´t forget one :P (if yes, feel free to shoot me )
and yesh, i know, i´m a fox-freak - SO WHAT? *proud* :P

PS:
have to mention luzie here; she knows why ;)

If you don't mind me asking, why is it that people call the red and black canine the "maned wolf" if it's neither a fox or a wolf? Shouldn't they have called it the "maned dog" instead so nobody get's confused? I always thought it was a wolf. But other than that this lloks like something I would see in a book about animals.

What about the Bengal Fox! You know a fox that lived in India, with the jackal, the hyena, the tiger, the wolf, the sloth bear, the rhino, the lion, the leopard, and the elephant for example.

It's just how the fox is named scientically - they use latin/greek names because in the past educated people all learnt 'ancient'* greek and latin, so they used those two languages to communicate between each other all over the world. Nowadays the main language of science is English, and the majority of papers are written in English now.
Most scientific names have two parts
The first part of the name is the family, so if you have two animals that have the same first name, you know that the two are genetically similar, the second part is the species name, so that is individual to each species. Sometimes there can be a third name which can denote a subspecies - there are genetic differences, but they would still be able to breed and produce fertile young. (This is the definition of a species.)
eg 2-part name = Homo sapiens = humans
eg 3-part name = Panthera Tigris Altacia = the Amur/Siberian Tiger.

Sometimes an animal will have 2 scientific names this is normally due to when it was classified there wasn't such thing as genetics, but now with genetic profiling we can see how closely related animals are more accurately. Ie the snow leopard was put in it's own genus when it was classified in the 1700's, but in 2008 it was discovered that it would fit better if it was put in the genus Panthera, with the other main big cats. (interestingly, it's condsidered to be closely related to the tiger more than the african leopard!)

Sorry for this paragraph, but I thought it might help you! There are bigger divisions as well which can be remembered by 'King Penguins Crap On French Girl's Skirts' (I just find it amusing lol!)

Ehehe 8D

Ja. Werde ein Wysper. Bitte 8D

What are the 5 most common foxes in the world? I can't find the answer anywhere else so I was hoping you would know.

:iconculpeo-fox:
Culpeo-Fox Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2014  Professional General Artist
1. Red Fox (the most widespread canid and the most widespread predator world wide).
2. Arctic Fox (found throughout the upper Northern Hemisphere)
3. Fennec Fox (widespread in the northern parts of Africa and becoming relatively popular as an exotic pet in the States)

These are the most widespread. From there, it's getting troubling to find out since the size ranges of the other species are quite similar. The three rarest ones, on the other hands are:

1. Darwin's Fox (with only about 320 indivdiduals remaining, this species is the rarest and most endangered canid  in the wolrd (and not the Ethiopian Wold, as very often but falsely assumed)
2. Channel Island Gray Fox (endemic on six of the eight Channel Islands)
3. Sechuran Fox (a very small distribution in the Sechura Desert)

It's so nice to see this! I hate being in a role play or something and a persons character is a fox because then im just sitting there going ok....what one of the many fox species are you.....

Now for someone to make something like this on panthers to show that a black panther isn't a species of cat just how the silver fox (unless you count the domesticated silver fox) isn't a species of fox

*dundunduun*
