Animated Movie Poster/Cover Rant

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 24, 2012, 12:41 PM
Since my journal needs an update i thought hey, why not posting this here, too. This is an art site after all and should be interesting to you as well.

I am someone who might be called a "cineaste" - because it's true. I friggin' LOVE movies. I love watching them, collecting them, doing research, listening to audio commentaries and learning about the backgrounds. And i always had a soft spot for animated motion pictures. Still do. Disney is awesome, so is Dreamworks and the not so wellknown ones.

Lately i went through my DVD-Collection once more and...i just realised again how MUCH i despise the awful covers that go along with most of the animated movie DVD releases. Especially when i recall the original theatrical posters - which are all (design wise) of sheer BRILLIANCE, full of power and emotion and actually dignify the movie's content. Not to be compared with the cheap DVD covers. Little comparison for you to see what i mean - because i felt like doing one.

movie poster comparison

(if you can't see it in fullsize, open it in a new tab when you're on the Scrapbook page or download it)

Note: The DVD Covers i featured here are the newest copies (because the newest are among the worst) and i gladly own some of the older copies (like Titan A.E. or Nimh where they more decent (although still bad) DVD cover artworks)

I really wish people would just keep the awesome posters as covers and don't design some shitty new ones - how great would that be for the collector nerds of us. Okay, yes, i KNOW why they do it: Animated movies, they are, so children are the main target - and most children want cheerful, colourful, happywappy cutesywootsie covers, end of story - i see that, i see that. But still....aaaarh. I want to cry whenever i look at the Prince Egypt DVD (which doesn't represnet the excellent movie AT ALL) and compare it to that EPIC theatrical poster they had back then. Hrsn. Or why can't they publish a special collector's edition with awesome theatrical posters only?

Funny though - unlike the DVDs most Soundtrack covers still feature the theatrical movie posters. Which is awesome but still....can someone explain WHY? Because it makes no sense.

(and DAMN, i need to design a new Journal Skin. Because this one makes no sense as well.)

Ugh, I also hate when the Japanese movies covers are changed. Japanese covers are usually minimalistc and peaceful-looking and the american contraparts are more actiony and badass for some reason.

I believe it's because the DVD-covers appeal more to children? When my little sister wants a new DVD it's because she's seen a character on the cover she likes, whether it's the princess or just the cat. The movies are childrens movies after all.

Did you ever see the initial Warner Brothers cover-art for 'The Fountain' with the two heads of Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz with bright and annoying colors? It was so awful Aronofsky said he pushed for the UK poster as an alternative, which they ultimately went for, thankfully.

The Fountain actually is my Number One favourite film and i happen to own any copy/cover-variation that exists. And yes - i know which one you mean. It's just as horrendous as some trailers that i've seen for this movie.

I didnt think it was that bad till I see them side by side. Why did they go threw all that work to make the posters and not use them more. UGGGH that is a shame. The closest one I saw to the poster was Land Before Time. Secret of Nyhm the VHS featured the movie poster would couldn't the dvd.

Arghhh! Why!? xD Why is this hapenning... Can't they just take the poster for a dvd cover. This is absolutely... intriguing, that all animated movies share the same fate.
I just had the same topic with my friend about Balto cover.
Thanks for sharing this x3

All of Amblin's movies have the absolute WORST cover art. It's a real shame. The Secret of Nimnh(Nihmn Nimn....whatevs) is a beautiful picture, in my opinion. These are clear examples of what happens when an artist tries too hard to advertise something good.

I've always noticed how on the DVD covers the characters look NOTHING like they do in the actual movie, I thought Treasure Planet was the worst. I never realized that the original posters wouldn't look like that and now it makes me mad, because I have my favorite scenes in mind when I grab the DVD and when the person looks all weird, half the time it sort of sours it and I just end up putting some of my favorite movies back on the shelf.

I always flip the movie over and look at the back :XD: The shots from the movie that are usually on there tend to ease the pain. A little.
