Description

งูสมิงทะเลปากเหลือง.
Laticauda colubrina.

A beautiful Sea Snake that moves itself through the water with its flat tail, like all of the Sea Snakes do and which - again, like all the other Sea Snakes - is capable of providing a very dangerous and powerful, venomous bite (even though it is much more likely to get stung by a ray or step on a stone fish as this snake is known for its docile nature and normally doesn't bite unprovoked).

Still, a bite from a Yellow-Lipped Sea Krait can be considered as pretty special, mostly due to its rather disturbing effects: In many cases, the bite stays unoticed as it is said to be completely painless (which again can make the bite of a Sea Krait so treacherous) - instead, the victim would feel a boost of euphoria, followed by apathy which would then, hours later, result in lethal conditions such as apnoea.

Yellow-Lipped Sea Kraits prey on Moray Eels like the New Guinea Moray; interestingly, it was discovered that New Guinea Moray Eels can tolerate quite an amount of the Sea Krait's venom, while other moray species which are not preyed upon by the krait happen to be extremely sensitive to the same venom. Following this discovery, the venom was also tested on morays living in an area where the Yellow-Lipped Sea Krait does not appear and the venom also proved to be fatal at the smallest doses. These discoveries demonstrate how much of an impact the predator-prey-relation actually has and how it plays into the evolution of the animals involved.
